Education System

UK includes the regions of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Primary education is compulsory between the ages of 5 and 11 and secondary education between 11 and 16. After 16, the students get ready for further education also called as tertiary education.
Post 16, schools and colleges offer general educational courses and vocational courses. Universities and higher education colleges cater to the Higher education needs of students.

UK is now the premier destination for quality education. UK offers the total range of academic and vocational courses followed by internationally accepted certification. The programs are offered virtually in every subject, catering the needs of students of all ages and all stages of their education.
The Universities and Colleges Admissions Service [UCAS] translates qualifications into point scores for the purpose of admission to undergraduate courses. The admission process into most undergraduate courses in the UK is guided by UCAS.

Higher Education in UK

The older universities in UK were established by a Royal Charter or Act of Parliament. The Privy Council has the power to grant university status to an institution that has the necessary characteristics. In the ranks of older universities are England's Oxford and Cambridge, that date from the 12th and 13th centuries, and Scotland's 15th century's universities of St Andrews, Glasgow and Aberdeen.

With the passage of the 1992 Higher Education Act of 1992, two changes came. The former polytechnics were given the status of universities and 'new' universities that were earlier vocational colleges emerged. In UK the Universities are self-governing and independent institutions that have their own degree-awarding powers.

There is a strict education monitoring mechanism in UK. This is ensured by the Department for Education and Skills [DfES], which is a government department that deals with all aspects of education. DfES works towards creating opportunity, creating avenues for realizing potential and achieving excellence in standards of education.

UK Education: Benefits to Indian Students

It is a notable fact that there are currently more than 7,500 Indian students studying in UK universities and colleges.
Popular Subjects: All the most popular subjects that include Business and Management Studies, Engineering, Information Technology, Designing, Architecture, Medicine , Law, Science and Technology courses and Art & Design courses.

Quality of Education: The quality and standard of education in UK is maintained and monitored by Quality Assurance Agency [QAA]. The QAA is an independent body that (along with higher education institutions) defines academic standards and quality. It also provides advice to the Privy Council on issues relating to degree awarding powers.

Affordability: The Cost of education in UK includes the course fees and the living costs. The course fee is lesser in UK when compared with most other developed countries. The reasons are obvious as institutions offer short-term courses and as a result, the total cost of study is lower. The shorter the course the more is the realization of student's potential and expertise, which is not the case in long-term course students. This evidently makes UK's education a better value-for-money proposition.
The cost of higher education varies from region to region in UK, which is generally expensive in London & South-East England when compared to North England, Wales, Scotland & North Ireland.
