Why Recommendation Letters?

A recommendation letter is a detailed discussion, from a faculty member, of the personal qualities, accomplishments, and experiences that makes a student unique and perfect for the programs applied. While the academics/ transcripts and test scores are very vital for the admission procedures, an excellent recommendation letter can make up for weaknesses in any of these areas. Ideally, letters should cover your academic and scholastic skills, research abilities, etc.

Who to Ask?

Most graduate programs require two or more recommendation letters. Most students find difficulty in choosing professionals to approach for letters. Consider faculty members, administrators, internship/co-operative education supervisors, and employers. These persons should

  • know you well/long enough to write with authority
  • know your educational and career goals
  • know your work
  • know where you are applying
  • describe your work positively
  • be able to favorably compare you with your peers
  • be able to write a good letter
