Applying Requirements for Year Abroad - Guidelines
University courses in India are normally three to five years long. Sometimes, students may want to pursue projects or courses which their college cannot offer. In such a scenario, a student has to finish that course and then pursue an independent course abroad in order to be job ready or for their educational interests. The smarter thing to do, however is to spend a year studying in a university abroad while it counts for their home degree.
What is a year abroad?
A year abroad is a course some universities offer wherein they take students enrolled in universities here as students for one year. They can pursue their relevant study with the facilities offered by the host university. They can come back and join the home university with the rest of the class, without missing out on any credits. This is a method by which students can maximise their potential and gain great educational experiences.
What are the advantages of a year abroad?
A year abroad can help the student in three major ways.
Firstly, the student gets an international educational exposure. Not only do they get a feel of the university and education abroad, but a year under the right professors could help them greatly when they apply for graduate schools. Sometimes, a student who has spent a year abroad is very easily granted admissions for higher education programs.
Secondly, spending a year abroad also means greater global industry knowledge. Many university courses abroad offer practical and industry relevant programs and thus, a student will be placed on a better pedestal when applying for employment. The student will be more aware of latest practices in the industry and will also have an ability to work with people from different backgrounds – both of which are great skills in the corporate world.
Thirdly, the student gets to experience a new culture and people from different backgrounds. Their experience in a different environment can broaden their horizons and help them grow as individuals. It also offers a great platform for networking.
How do I apply for a year abroad?
A Confluence, not only do we provide step by step guidance, but we also offer partnership programs between Universities across India and host Universities abroad for such programs. Depending on the student’s interest we can help the student select a suitable program. Sometimes the student may also be able to design the course consulting with their home university, the host university and our experts. Once this is done, we can help prepare the student to apply for the same.
What are the application requirements?
Unlike a regular admission application, these change with the course and the host university. Some universities may want a test for English Language Proficiency (such as the IELTS or the TOEFL). Some other universities may want the student to be proficient in a foreign language. Generally however, the student’s resume, academic documents, a statement of purpose indicating idea/reason behind the study abroad and references/letters of recommendation are required. Interviews are normally unlikely.
Will I need to apply for a student visa?
Host Universities require the student to apply for a student Visa for spending a year abroad. At Confluence, Visa Interview and Application Preparation is also taken care of and we will help you have a successful and hassle free Visa experience.
What are the funding options available to students?
Normally a student will have to pay regular yearly fee of the host university for a year abroad. However, this fee itself may vary depending on the University and the country. Many colleges in India have internships and placements cells that may have funding options for students spending a year abroad at a partner university. Universities also offer many merit based funding options. Scholarships, fellowships, studentships, grants and bursaries are some of them. However, these are highly competitive in nature. Loans are another alternative. Furthermore, work study options can also be arranged, depending on Visa regulations and the University’s policies.
A year is an optimum amount of time to spend abroad in order to understand education outside India without doing a full degree. Compared to programs like a semester abroad, a year abroad can be a lot more rewarding, both academically and in terms of employment.
