Enhance your application with extracurricular activities By Nidhi

Extracurricular activities are just as important as maintaining good academics when applying to universities abroad. Universities appreciate students who go beyond their studies to develop their personality, soft skills, and strengths. There are many extracurricular activities that students can participate in that will improve their university application. Additionally, the extra skill set will improve employability when searching for jobs in the future. Companies will appreciate students who have partaken in activities outside of the schooling, and have unique skill sets.

Types of extracurricular activities:

Engaging in sport outside of the classroom is one of the easiest ways to improve your portfolio. Many students naturally enjoy sports, such as football, cricket, basketball, or swimming. It is a good idea to join a sports related club that helps you progress or allow you to gain a leadership position. One idea could be to lead a football club in your school –  this will allow you to gain leadership and team work skills. Additionally, joining competitions and winning medals at regional or state levels are equally as impressive.

Do you have an interest in learning a particular instrument? Learning an instrument not only improves your hand eye coordination, but is also very impressive to universities. Universities appreciate that you have taken time outside of your academic life to engage in a hobby. Consider taking musical exams such as ABRSM or Trinity College London exams to strengthen your application and make you stand out from other applicants.

Volunteering at NGOs

Philanthropic extracurricular activities such as volunteering at NGOs or orphanages can greatly improve your application. You will be able to interact with people from outside of your social circle and improve your leadership and organizational skill set. Additionally, this extracurricular activity is highly rewarding and gives you a large sense of self satisfaction.

Leading clubs or organizations

Another great idea is to start an organization within your own school. Some examples could be a woman empowerment club, a club dedicated to fundraising for an animal shelter, or partnering with an NGO to raise funds. You could also encourage your other classmates to sign up to your club to make more of an impact.

Whatever extracurricular activity you choose, make sure that you enjoy it and it is not a burden. When you partake in activities that you genuinely enjoy, you will derive a large sense of fulfillment and will be able to progress further in your field.

Apart from your admission, your extracurricular activities play a vital role in the development of your personality.
